Open source contribution does not start only with building massive new frameworks or overhauling system architectures. Finding everyday friction—such as fixing a point where users get stuck following documentation or addressing small runtime exceptions—and proposing scoped, well-tested fixes is where healthy contributions begin.
This post serves as the 2026 follow-up to my earlier seminars: Becoming a Standard Framework GitHub Contributor (Practical) in 2021 and Let's Contribute to the Template Project! in 2025. I have compiled my hands-on experiences across actual Pull Requests submitted to various eGovFrame repositories and the lessons learned from maintainer reviews into a 20-slide presentation.

Finding a Starting Topic
When looking for a contribution topic, the key is observing small, concrete friction points rather than trying to invent large features. The presentation outlines three initial areas suitable for beginners.
The first is documentation and setup guides. This includes fixing broken links, missing steps, or heading hierarchy errors encountered when walking through setup instructions. A typical example is PR #729 in egovframe-docs, which corrected heading levels.
The second is small quality issues. This covers reproducible bugs or pure utility logic with clear rules. Examples include PR #1167, which addressed original filename attribute keys and download headers, and PR #916, which added phone number masking with unit tests.
The third is operational safety and infrastructure. This involves dependency security patches, runtime configuration updates, or volume adjustments. Examples include PR #61 updating a vulnerable dependency, PR #74 adding readiness probes across nine deployments, and PR #121 externalizing upload paths and configuring persistent storage.
Before editing code, always verify the repository's purpose, default branch (typically main), and open PRs for duplicates. Even clean code is unlikely to be accepted if it does not match the repository's role.
Actual Contribution Cases
As of September 12, 2026, my public GitHub record across the eGovFramework organization shows 219 merged PRs, 4 open PRs, and 262 PRs closed without merge. These counts provide historical context rather than a target metric; each outcome provided distinct lessons. Below are three representative cases highlighted in the slides.
File Download Header and Property Key Alignment (common-components #1167)
In egovframe-common-components, the property key for original filenames when generating download headers did not match the guide documentation (orginFile). Following maintainer feedback, the key was aligned with the guide, and five unit test cases verifying header string construction were added. While this did not mock the actual HTTP servlet response call, it verified header generation within the requested scope and was merged on August 26, 2026. (PR #1167)
Container Upload Path and Persistent Storage Configuration (template-simple-backend #121)
When running the template backend in read-only container filesystems, file uploads could fail due to write restrictions in default paths. The upload directory was externalized to configuration, and a Kubernetes PersistentVolumeClaim (egovframe-template-simple-backend-files) mounted at /app/files was introduced so uploads survive container restarts. The PR transparently noted that while YAML configurations and mount paths were validated, full E2E verification from browser to storage in a live cluster was not conducted. The PR was merged. (PR #121)
Standalone Utility Test Addition (common-components #1166)
A PR proposing standalone unit tests for common component utilities was closed without merge. The maintainer explained that because egovframe-common-components serves as a sample and template demonstrating usage patterns, standalone test-only additions fall outside its maintenance scope. This closed PR provided an important lesson: understand the distinct purpose of each repository and adjust contribution strategies accordingly rather than pushing changes that do not fit. (PR #1166)
Updating After Review
Maintainer feedback can appear in three places: general PR comments, review summaries, or inline code comments. Code reviews are not personal critiques but collaborative efforts to align proposed changes with the repository's expectations.
When feedback arrives, translate it into concrete action. For instance, in PR #1167, requested header generation tests were promptly added. In PR #28 and PR #29, streaming error fallbacks were routed to user-visible responses using Flux.just(fallbackHandler.getFallbackMessage(e)).
Equally important is being transparent about verification boundaries. Just as PR #121 explicitly stated that live cluster E2E testing was omitted, stating what was and was not tested helps reviewers focus their attention. When facing a closed PR, accept the feedback, reflect on repository fit, and pivot toward smaller, better-suited topics.
AI Assistance and Human Verification
Using AI tools during contribution has become common practice. Slide 14 outlines a strategy for using AI for drafts while keeping verification in human hands. Note that the prompt examples are illustrative techniques rather than historical logs of specific PRs.
Even when delegating exploration and drafting to AI, verification remains the contributor's responsibility:
- "Find the function chain from error occurrence to user response" — The contributor must trace the codebase manually to confirm that the functions are genuinely invoked and errors properly caught.
- "Compare differences before and after changes and spot edge cases" — The contributor must inspect modified files to ensure no side effects break other modules.
- "Suggest unit tests verifying normal responses and error handling" — The contributor must build and run tests locally to confirm they pass and assert expected outputs (as in the streaming fallback of PR #28).
Furthermore, using AI as a contributor's workflow aid is fundamentally different from proposing new AI features into the framework itself. When contributing to AI repositories like egovframe-ai-rag or awesome-egovframe PR #4, discuss major architectural proposals in GitHub Issues before opening a PR.
First Steps for Beginners
The fundamental PR workflow is straightforward:
Select repository → Check upstream → Fork & branch → Fix one issue → Verify with evidence → Submit PR & respond to feedbackName branches clearly (e.g., git switch -c fix/docs-link) and run git diff --check before committing to catch whitespace errors.
Beyond modifying code directly, you can also contribute by showcasing useful projects and lowering the barrier to running samples.
awesome-egovframe is a curated community list gathering useful tools and libraries around the standard framework ecosystem. Seven proposed additions—AI Starter (PR #4), Public Data Integration (PR #5), Observability (PR #6), Korean Cryptography SEED/LEA (PR #9), Access Logs (PR #10), RAG Evaluation (PR #11), and eGovFrame Launcher (PR #14)—were all merged. Discovering open source tools and verifying their visibility, license, README clarity, and maintenance status is a valuable contribution.
eGovFrame Launcher is a local GUI tool that takes standard framework samples from clone, build, run, to browser launch in one place. Running samples locally and documenting discrepancies with setup guides or runtime errors provides a natural starting point for documentation updates and bug fixes.
Getting started today requires just four simple lines:
Problem = The friction experienced by users
Evidence = Logs or documentation proving why it is an issue
Fix = A scoped, focused change tackling one problem
